Serenade of the Seas is the third in a series of ships built
in Germany for Royal Caribbean. (See also our tour of
sister ship Jewel of the Seas) At 90,000 gross tons, she is
a large ship but has a much more intimate feel. Moreover,
it is a different feel than the larger RCI mega-cruise ships.
While she does not have the activity and excitement of a
Royal Promenade, she has a subdued refined elegance. It
is not surprising therefore that the parent company has used
this design as the starting point for Celebrity Cruises’
Solstice-class ships (See Celebrity Solstice profile).
As an RCI ship, Serenade has many of the signature RCI
amenities such as a rock climbing wall, the Viking Crown
Lounge and the Portofino and Chops Grille specialty
restaurants. However, due to the ship’s layout, rooms such
as those used for the specialty restaurants seem larger and
more substantial, which in turn enhances these features.
Similarly, while the Solarium is a nice feature on the
Voyager and Freedom class ships, the glass-enclosed
Solarium on Serenade is one of the prettiest areas at sea.
Only two areas on the ship can be described as somewhat
Las Vegas-influenced - - the ten-story center atrium and the
casino. The remainder of the ship is an elegant
contemporary styling highlighted by large expanses of
glass that not only allow for great views but which allow
natural light into the ship. There is a substantial amount of
wood paneling in the bars and lounges. The two-level
main restaurant is a vast space broken by columns that soar
up to the ceiling making the room seem even larger.
In addition to the elegance of her interior design, Serenade
has some impressive nautical attributes. With the ability
to reach 25 knots, she is very fast for a cruise ship. Her
dual azipods and three bow thrusters give she very good
maneuverability when docking. The gas turbine power
plant is environmentally friendly, although more expensive
than a traditional diesel power plant. (Interestingly, the
Solstice class utilize diesel electric power).
In the summer months, Serenade does cruises to Alaska
from Vancouver, Canada. As the weather becomes cooler,
she transits the Panama Canal to San Juan, Puerto Rico
where she does seven-day Caribbean cruises.
