CRUISE SHIP PHOTO ESSAY
EPIC
ARRIVES
IN NASSAU
Cruise ship photo essay - - Norwegian Epic - - Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) -- Epic Arrives in Nassau
Epic traverses the narrow entrance
to Nassau harbor.
The harbor is broadly rectangular
in shape. The north side is
bounded by a narrow barrier
island. The south side is the city
of Nassau. At the western end of
the harbor are the cruise ship
docks.
About half way down the
harbor, Epic begins to turn.
In the winter, Norwegian Epic cruises
from Miami to the Caribbean. One of
the ports of call each week is Nassau
in the Bahamas.
Nassau is a well-developed port with
facilities to handle several cruise ships
at one time. Captains often prefer to
back into their ships into the berths on
arrival thus avoiding having to back
out of the berth in the evening or at
night during departure.
This makes watching the arrival more
interesting because once the ship
enters the harbor, it has to execute a
180 degree turn before backing into
the berth. As a result, onlookers get to
see the ship from all angles.
Even though Epic's berth is in the
middle of the cruise ship piers, the
ship maneuvers towards the south
side of the harbor.
The bow begins to point towards
the barrier island on the north
side of the harbor.
Swinging around, Epic turns so that she is perpendiuclar to the cruise ship piers
and facing the barrier island.
Epic stops turning when she is facing the
eastern end of the harbor and her stern is
aligned with the cruise ship piers. She
then slowly backs into her berth.
