OVERVIEW

Ruby Princess is the ninth Grand-class ship built for Princess Cruises.
She may also be the last of this popular series for Princess, as no more on
order.  (Another Grand-class ship is being built, however, for sister
company P&O Cruises as a sister ship to
Ventura).  In many ways, Ruby
may be the ultimate Grand.
Passenger Services Director Dirk Brand has observed: "This is really a
very well-designed ship.  We have many of them and they have
developed in the last couple of years, starting from the
Grand Princess to
now, very well. It has improved with every time.  They are very
well-designed and laid out and you don't have the feeling that you have
3,100 guests onboard the ship.  The guests really have so much choice.  I
think on a seven-day cruise it keeps everybody very busy to get
everything checked out, if they wish."
Indeed, Ruby Princess carries forward the amenities that have proven
very popular on sisters
Crown Princess and Emerald Princess such as the
Piazza (
see below), the adults-only Sanctuary retreat, the expanded
Sabatini's Italian restaurant and the Crown Grill steakhouse.   The elegant
decor of the more recent Grands is also echoed on Ruby.
However, Ruby is also a step forward. "We have changed quite a few
things in the entertainment product.  Two new production shows and a
brand new welcome onboard production show.  We have added a lot of
new concepts in the Piazza.  We have new concepts with the wines, new
menus -  - the menus in the main dining room have been changed and
upgraded.  We have the new wireless and cellphone service on the ship.
We started implementing the chilled face cloths on the decks.  If you
come from ashore, we hand out new face cloths - - nice chilled, moist
face cloths when they come back from a hot excotic port.  We added the
pub luncheon in the Wheelhouse Bar.  Quite a few intiatives and concepts
that so far we are getting great comments and feedback on."
Perhaps the most popular of the new concepts intiated on Ruby
Princess is the Ultimate Ship Tour which takes passengers behind the
scenes to see places normally closed to passengers including: backstage in
the theater, the galley, the engine control room, the laundry, the navigation
bridge and even into the ship's funnel.  Senior officers greet the
passengers at each stop and explain what goes on there.  "It is an industry
first.  We are overun with requests.  We get such phenomenal feedback
from the guests."
During her first year of service, Ruby Princess sails the Caribbean
during the winter and the Mediterranean in the summer.   Most passengers
are American, however, even on Caribbean cruises there are often a
substantial number of British passngers.  The lifestyle onboard is relaxed
but not unsophisticated.

The Piazza at the base of the central atrium is the
crossroads of the ship.  It has an Italian-inspired
decor with marble and pillars.  Surrounding it are
the International Cafe, Vines, the Internet Cafe, the
Future Cruise Desk, and the Michelangelo Dining
Room. Overlooking it are the shops, the Reception
Desk, the Captain's Circle Desk and Crooners Bar.
It seems like there is always something happening
in the Piazza including carving demonstrations
(above right) as well as performances by the ship's
singers (right), jugglers (below), pianists (left), and
a string ensemble.
