OVERVIEW

Ocean Princess is an enchantingly elegant small ship.  Her interior
is reminiscent of a country club or a stately home with extensive
wood paneling, wrought iron work, rich carpeting and
comfortable over-stuffed furniture.

This ship was originally built for Renaissance Cruises for which
she sailed under the name R Four.  That cruise line went
bankrupt in the fall of 2001 and a few months later R Four was
purchased by Princess Cruises and her name was changed to
Tahitian Princess.

Reportedly as a condition for subsidies received from the French
government while R Four was being built, the ship was required
to cruise French Polynesia for a certain number of years.
Accordingly, Princess based the ship in Tahiti for most of her
career.

In 2009, however, the ship was given an extensive re-fit and
re-named Ocean Princess.  Her itinerary changed as well so that
she now sails on long cruises seemingly all over the world.

R Four was one of eight nearly identical ships built for
Renaissance.  Another of her sisters also sails for Princess.  The
others sail for ultra-luxury cruise lines Azamara Club Cruises (
see
profile of Azamara Journey) and Oceania Cruises (see profile of
Regatta) as well as for Princess's sister company P&O Cruises
(
see profile of Adonia).  While Princess does not view its smaller
ships as an ultra-luxury division, the fact that other lines are using
these ships  as ultra-luxury ships underscores the elegance of
Ocean Princess.

Princess does acknowledge that its small ships are a different
cruise experience than on its large ships. It characterizes them as
having a more relaxed, leisurely ambiance  but yet with all the
activities and amenities of the larger ships. And indeed, Ocean
Princess has a surprising number of features that are usually only
found on larger ships.

Most of the passengers who sail Ocean Princess are North
Americans.  They tend to be experienced cruisers.  Because of
the length of the cruises, very few children sail with her.

As noted above, Ocean Princess' schedule takes her all over.
Because of her small size, she is able to visit a number of ports
that th bigger ships cannot enter.
