PHOTO TOUR AND
COMMENTARY
PRINCESS CRUISES
Coral Princess is a specialized cruise ship.

First, she was built to do Panama Canal cruises.
Her dimensions are such that she is just able to fit
through the original Panama Canal locks.
Consequently, she is used for cruises that involve a
partial transit (Fort Lauderdale into the Canal, turn
around and back to Fort Lauderdale) or a full
transit (e.g. Fort Lauderdale to Los Angles) of the
Panama Canal.

Second, part of her power plant is a gas turbine
engine, which produces less emissions.  This
makes her well-suited for Alaska cruises in light of
Alaska's strict environmental laws.

Of course, Coral Princess can to do other
itineraries as well.   Capable of speeds up to 24
knots (the fastest in the Princess fleet), she can
easily do extended itineraries.  In addition, Coral
Princess is an enlarged version of Princess'
Sun-class
(see, e.g., our profile of Dawn
Princess).   Although she is bigger than a Sun class
ship, she carries approximately the same number
of guests (assuming double occupancy of the
cabins).  Thus, there is more room per guest.

The ship offers guests an array of options.  She
was built with two main dining rooms, two
specialty restaurants and a buffet restaurant.
However, Princess utilizes the space so as to
provide several additional complimentary and
specialty dining experiences.  She is also unusual in
that her secondary entertainment venue is larger
and better equipped than the primary entertainment
venue on some ships.

Because this ship does unique itineraries, she tends
to attract seasoned travelers who are looking for
something more than a cruise in the sunshine to the
popular islands.  They tend to be in their 50s or
60s, well-educated and upper middle class.  Most
guests are from the United States and Canada.

Island Princess is the sister ship to Coral Princess.

The Atrium is the heart of the ship.  The
main dining rooms, the shops, and the
promenades leading to the ship's other
public areas are located or radiate from
the Atrium.  It is also where you will find
the reception desk and the tour office.
This space is also used for receptions
and features live music in the evenings.

For the most part, the public space are decorated in a conservative style with its roots in traditional passenger ship style.
However, blended in are elements of late 20th century decor, which gives these spaces (e.g., the atrium) a glamorous Las
Vegas look.

The art collection is predominantly traditional with still-lifes, landscapes and works relating to nautical history.  In the
spa and Lotus Pool areas, there are a number of Asian pieces.
The Passenger Services Desk (i.e.
reception)(above left) and the
Shore
Excursions Desk
(offering tours in
the various ports) (above right) are
located next to each other on the port
side of the main lobby at the base of
the Atrium.  The
Future Cruise
Sales Office
is nearby on the port
side (left). It also handles Princess'
loyalty program, the Captain's Circle.
The
Port Shopping Desk is on the
lower promenade (right).  The
specialist gives recommendations
about the shopping opportunities in the
ports).
