Quantcast
OVERVIEW

Norwegian Star is one of two ships in Norwegian's
Dawn class.  Although these ships are slightly smaller
than the subsequent Jewel class - the workhorses of the
Norwegian fleet - the Dawns are quite similar to those
ships in layout and features.

The Star was originally ordered for Star Cruises where
she was to have had the name Superstar Libra.
However, during construction, Star Cruises made the
decision to deploy both ships of this class to its recent
acquisition, Norwegian Cruise Line.  Since Star
Cruises uses the Superstar prefix for its own ships, the
proposed names of the two ships had to be changed. Of
course, the name selected for Norwegian Star contains
a subtle reference to Norwegian's then-parent company.

Norwegian Star was built by the Meyer-Werft shipyard
in Papenburg, Germany, who have a reputation for
producing high quality ships.  Star is no exception.  The
ship has good seakeeping qualities and is capable of
speeds in excess of 25 knots.

The atmosphere on Norwegian Star is relaxed and
friendly.  Under Norwegian's Freestyle approach to
cruising, the guest has a great amount of freedom to
design his or her cruise experience.  Norwegian makes
the ingredients available and it is up to you to decide
which ones to use.  You can choose a luxurious suite,
an economical stateroom or something in between.

Once onboard, guests can choose from fine dining in a
French-style specialty restaurant to comfort food in the
buffet.  Moreover, the ship does not just offer the
extremes but also numerous choices that lie between
the extremes.  There are also options like a
Chef's
Table experience, a Jazz Brunch and a Murder Mystery
lunch.

In the entertainment area, the Star has the traditional
cruise ship production shows and activities.  However,
Norwegian is also innovating here with things like its
own version of Deal or No Deal and with original
shows such as the high energy "Elements" on
Norwegian Star.

The Star has spent much of her career sailing on the
West Coast of the United States doing Alaska cruises
and cruises to Mexico from Los Angles.  However, in
2012, she was re-deployed, first to Tampa, Florida and
then to New York.  She is scheduled to continue her
odyssey with a move to New Orleans and then to
Europe.

Above right: When entering and exiting port, onlookers frequently wave at the
officers on the bridge.  Because they are driving the ship, the officers cannot
wave back.  So in order to respond to people's waves, Star has a giant hand
mounted on a spring that waves as the ship goes along.
The Star has a very friendly
atmosphere.  Here, officers and
crew gather near the gangway to
welcome guests back to the ship
after a day ashore.
Accommodation on Norwegian Star range from
multi-room luxurious 6,694 square foot garden
villas to economical inside cabins.
