Quantcast
OVERVIEW

Norwegian Epic is the largest ship yet built for Norwegian.
In fact, at 153,000 gross tons she is the sixth largest cruise
ship in operation behind Royal Caribbean's two
Oasis-class ships (22,000 grt) and three Freedom-class
ships (154,000 grt)  and just ahead of Cunard's Queen Mary
2 (151,000 grt).  Amongst other things, Epic has  more than
20 dining venues and 20 bars and lounges.

However, the numbers are not what is important about
Norwegian Epic.  She is bigger than previous NCL ships
but she is not just more of the same, i.e.. - - she is not just a
larger version of her predecessors.

Along with Royal Caribbean's Oasis of the Seas and Allure
of the Seas, Epic marks a turning point in cruising.  She is
full of new and innovative ideas that will raise people's
expectations about what can be expected from a cruise ship.

Examples of this can be seen in the entertainment offerings
that include performances by established outside
performers who have resident troupes on the ship such as
the Blue Man Group and Legends in Concert.

It can also be seen in the accommodations.  Epic walks
away from the traditional cruise ship stateroom concept
employing curving walls and bathrooms divided into their
component parts.  It has found a way to accommodate solo
travelers, a segment of the cruising public that has
generally been ignored in recent years.  It has re-defned
luxury travel on large ships by creating an intimate
self-contained premium area that has the feel of a small
luxury ship but which allows guests access to all of the
features of the larger ship.

While Epic is different from her predecessors, NCL
regulars will find that she brings forward quite a few
favorite venues such as the Le Bistro French Specialty
Restaurant, Cagney's Steakhouse. La Cucina and the Bliss
Nightclub but on a grander scale.

When the original order for Epic was placed in 2006, she
was envisioned as being one of a pair of twins with a
possible third sibling coming later.  However, NCL
canceled the order for the second ship and never exercised
its option for the third.  As a result, Epic is and will remain
unique.  (N
orwegian has, however, recently ordered two
slightly smaller ships that will incorporate many of the
concepts developed for Epic).

While she was under construction, Epic sustained a
mysterious fire which was contained.  Despite damage to
some cabling, Epic was finished in time for her maiden
transatlantic crossing in June 2010.  She then acted as the
reviewing platform for the Macy's Fourth of July Fireworks
display in New York harbor before proceeding to Miami to
begin her regular schedule of Caribbean cruises.

Epic will cross the Atlantic again for a season of European
cruises in the Spring of 2011 and return to Miami in the fall
to resume her schedule of Caribbean cruises.

Two deck-high giant screens have
become a signature feature of the NCL
ships.  They show video productions
and are used for Wii games.
On Deck 13, Epic has a room decorated with various
plaques that have been given to the ship, where guests
can look to see what is happening on Epic's cockpit-style
Bridge.
