OVERVIEW

Carnival Valor is the third in Carnival’s Conquest class of cruise
ships (see our profiles of sister ships
Carnival Glory and Carnival
Freedom), which is an expanded version of Carnival’s Destiny class
ships (see our profile of
Carnival Destiny).  These are mega-cruise
ships of approximately 110,000 gross tons.  This means more
passengers but it also means more amenities and entertainment
facilities than on smaller ships.  Moreover, the activities on these
ships are scheduled in a way that tends to promote good passenger
flow through the public areas.

Just because one has seen one ship in a Carnival class of ships, it
does not mean that one has seen them all.  The layout of the public
areas may be the same but they all have their own very individual
décor and thus feel.  Designer Joe Farcus approaches each ship
individually with a new creative idea that serves as the inspiration for
the interior design of that ship.  Often these are stunning displays of
color and design.  Farcus believes that since the passenger is on
vacation leaving the real world behind, the design of the ship should
help to transport him or her into a different reality.  “What we have
onboard is an experience.  It is something meant for you to have fun,
relax, enjoy and all of those things that you come onboard the ship
for,” Farcus has commented.  Encompassed in the designs are ideas
that have been taken from art, literature and history that make
exploring the public rooms an adventure of discovery.

The creative idea for Carnival Valor is “heroes and heroic events.”
Consequently, the public areas - - bars, restaurants, stairways,
lounges, the casino, the theater and other public rooms - - all
celebrate heroes of heroic acts.  While tribute is paid to heroes from
a number of lands, “I wanted to really salute American heroes and
America.  So, when you are standing in the lobby and you are
looking up you see on the fascias of all of the balconies, these
portraits [of American heroes].  You’ll see the floor patterned in
granite stones which recall the American flag.  There are columns
which are surmounted by the American eagle done in gold leaf with a
flame-like stained-glass lamp coming out of the top, which reminded
me of the flame on the Statue of Liberty.  In the dome of the atrium
is a fantastic light feature that creates the colors of red, white and
blue and then at some point in time all the colors of the rainbow
come on to create [an allegory] of who all the people in America are.”

The majority of the passengers sailing on Valor are from the United
States and Canada.  Carnival attracts a large number of families
particularly in the summer and during holiday periods when the
schools are closed.
